Hot Stamping, also called foil stamping, is the process of impressing  the engraved stamp through a foil onto the surface to be printed at high temperature. The protruding part of the engraved stamp will leave foil on the surface, whereas the recessed part of the engraved stamp will leave the surface foil-free.

Hot stamping process

Step 1  Create the artwork to be hot stamped.

Step 2 (for plastic containers) Create the engraved stamp. The artwork to be hot stamped is engraved into a metal die using a die-cutting machine.
Step 2 (for glass containers) Silkscreen the artwork onto the glass containers. The artwork to be hot stamped is printed onto the glass containers with silkscreen printing.

Step 3  Choose the color for the hot stamping.

Step 4  Prepare the foil and position it on the hot stamping machine. Foil is put onto a foil roller and inserted between the stamp and the product to be printed.

Step 5 (for plastic containers) Heat the stamp: the engraved stamp is heated before pressing with the foil and the product to be stamped placed beneath it.
Step 5 (for glass containers) Heat the press: the press is heated before pressing with the foil and the product which has been silkscreened placed beneath it.

Step 6 (for plastic containers) Impress the foil: the heated stamp is pressed onto the foil positioned on the top of the product. The Protruding part of the engraved stamp will leave foil on the surface, whereas the recessed part of the engraved stamp will leave the surface foil-free. The heat and pressure impress the foil onto the surface of the product.
Step 6 (for glass containers) Impress the foil: the heated press is pressed onto the foil positioned on the top of the product. The foil will be impressed at the protruding part of the glass containers with silkscreen printing, whereas the foil won't be impressed at the recessed part of the glass containers with silkscreen printing.
